A four month old who weighs in at four pounds Tokkyu is, according to his owner, much calmer after his recent neutering but he still seemed very energetic to the Muttropolitan Diarist who had a hard time getting him to sit still. Traveling downtown on the 1 train, his owner said his little Chihuahua's Japanese name translates as "speedy", but it turns out tokkyu also refers to a super-speedy sort of train. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_express

lucy, ready for the apocalypse

Inspired by the Cormac McCarthy book The Road, in which a father and his young son wander the post-apocalyptic countryside encountering unspeakable horrors the Muttropolitan Diarist's friend DYG went out and bought a dog-specific bike basket for little Lucy. "That way," DYG said cheerily, "when the apocalypse comes and we leave New York on our bikes, Lucy can come with us. And then, when we run out of food, we can eat her!"

The Muttropolitan Diarist strives to capture dogs on the street but could not resist these two little nippers just off the street inside a stationery shop. Presenting Jang mi (yellow shoes), whose Korean name means "rose" and Mandoo (orange shoes) whose names means "dumpling". To me neither one of them is remotely floral or dumplingular but really that's beside the point, isn't it? I mean, they're wearing leather zip-up shoes.

lily has endured some tough times

Little Lily was rescued from City Critters. Her previous owners had been using her as a breeder -- horrifying always; especially weird because she's not a purebred. But according to her new owner, small dogs of any sort are in demand as breeders. She was dropped off at City Critters, along with a larger dog, because, the previous owners said, there was a fire in their house. These people later came back to retrieve the larger dog but left Lily. Thank goodness her lovely new owner (Amy, I believe?) scooped her up. Who could resist such a sweet little face?

Lily is likely a Chihuahua-something mix. Possible Min Pin or dachshund, but I am also wondering if maybe there is a little ferret in her. She is very nervous and discombobulated, very shy around people, but is apparently calming down and becoming more grounded day by day. The transition's going to be tough, but with such a kind new owner in her life, she's clearly now better off.
