saucisson en croute

This sausage is not technically en croute (that is to say, wrapped in a pastry) but really, the parka effect is much the same. This fellow goes by the name of Dieter. Always amusing when people give their dogs nationally-correct names. The literal translation of the German "dachshund", you might know, is not in fact "snausage" or "wiener" but "badger dog". Feel free to share this little nugget of knowledge at your next holiday party, perhaps when you are jostling for that tray of cocktail sausages.

i do say, i do love a nice corgi en croute. always have a few of those and a handful of plover eggs at the annual boxing day tea up at balmoral. of course in my granddad the duke of chomondelay's days they served daschund en croute with a crisp and icy gewurtzaminer and pillowy spaetzle at balmoral, but post-blitz they switched to a more rule britannia breed of dog with fresh spuds from the yorkshire dales. can't say i'd miss the (sauer)kraut stuff. always makes one so bloated that one's cummerbund feels like one of those new fangled corsets you see on french whores. right ho! the hunt's about to start. must dash but shall i see you at claridge's wednesday fortnight? viscount moreley's throwing together another one of his slapdash gin parties. there's some bizarre cat and dutch flower show going on in covent garden so there promises to be some right amusing yanks there.
